State Senator of the 11th District on Feb. 5.
Bridgeview Mayor Steven Landek has added the title of State Senator to his resume after being selected to replace State Sen. Louis Viverito.
Landek, 55, was named Viverito’s successor in the 11th Senate District by a vote of Democratic committeemen on Feb. 5 at Toyota Park. His selection was unanimous and the meeting took only 10 minutes.
He will serve the remainder of Viverito’s term, which expires in November 2012.
Landek, who has been mayor for the past 12 years and who is running unopposed for re-election in April, will remain as mayor.
"Technology today allows me to do both jobs easily enough," Landek said. "When I am in Springfield I can stay in touch with the village through my laptop and my Blackberry."
"I will not let my new job as State Senator take away from my duties as mayor," he said.
"In fact, my new job will allow me to represent the interests of Bridgeview in Springfield, and that’s something we’ve never had before. It also keeps the seat in the southwest suburbs."
"Being in the Senate allows me the chance to be the eyes and ears for Bridgeview in Springfield. If something comes along that I think can help Bridgeview, I will be there to help make it happen."
Landek is filling the shoes left by Viverito, 76, of neighboring Burbank, who retired last month after 16 years in the state Senate.
"Lou was a good supporter of Bridgeview and a great mentor to me," Landek said. "He was instrumental in supporting me over the years and preparing me for this job."
Landek said he has already gotten his committee appointments. "They gave me Appropriations II, Local Government, Revenue, Commerce and Human Services," he said. "Those are good ones. I’m with the money and local government, which is what I’m all about."
Landek will be working with state Rep. Michael Zalewski and House Speaker Mike Madigan, who represent the House districts that fall within the 11th Senate District.
Landek also serves as Lyons Township supervisor and Democratic committeeman.
